HVAC Ventilation CFM & Air Change Rate Calculator

Use our free ventilation CFM calculator. Designed based on data from ASHRAE 62.1 and ASHRAE 62.2 standards, this tool helps you estimate required airflow based on your space dimensions and ventilation needs. It can calculate required airflow (CFM & CMH) for residential, commercial, medical, and industrial spaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

HVAC Ventilation & Airflow Sizing Guide

Answers to common technical questions regarding CFM calculation formulas, metric unit conversions, and ASHRAE ventilation rates.

How do I calculate CFM for room ventilation?

Room CFM is calculated using the formula: CFM = (Room Volume in cubic feet × Air Changes per Hour) ÷ 60. Alternatively, using air change cycle time: CFM = Room Volume in cubic feet ÷ Cycle Duration in minutes.

What is the difference between CFM and CMH?

CFM stands for Cubic Feet per Minute (Imperial), while CMH represents Cubic Meters per Hour (Metric, m³/h). To convert CFM to CMH, multiply CFM by 1.69901 (1 CFM ≈ 1.7 CMH).

How many air changes per hour (ACH) are recommended by ASHRAE?

Recommended ventilation rates vary by occupancy and room function under ASHRAE 62.1 and 62.2 standards. Typically, residential bedrooms and living rooms require 0.5 to 1.0 ACH, offices require 6 to 8 ACH, classrooms require 8 ACH, and commercial kitchens or labs require 15 to 30 ACH.
