A whole-house energy recovery ventilator (ERV) or heat recovery ventilator (HRV) is a centralized ventilation unit that supplies and exhausts air through a coordinated duct layout. What is the difference between an ERV and an HRV?

An HRV exchanges sensible heat between exhaust and supply air. An ERV exchanges heat and moisture. The right choice depends on climate, indoor humidity goals, building use and the ventilation design; neither label alone determines compliance.

Why is external static pressure needed for sizing?

Fans deliver different airflow as duct resistance changes. The duty point should include duct length, fittings, filters, terminals and balancing so the selected unit can be checked against its fan curve.

Can a centralized ERV or HRV be selected from floor area alone?

No. Floor area is only one input. Occupancy, room use, required outdoor-air rate, duct resistance, climate, controls and service constraints should be included in the engineering selection.

What ventilation-rate reference should a project use?

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises aiming for 5 or more air changes per hour (ACH) of clean air in building rooms. This is a public-health ventilation target, not a universal unit-sizing rule. For U.S. residential whole-house projects, ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 62.2 is the applicable residential ventilation reference; apply the edition and local code adopted for the specific project.
