A whole-house energy recovery ventilator (ERV) or heat recovery ventilator (HRV) is a centralized ventilation unit that supplies and exhausts air through a coordinated duct layout. What is the difference between an ERV and an HRV?

Why is external static pressure needed for sizing?

Can a centralized ERV or HRV be selected from floor area alone?

No. Floor area is only one input. Occupancy, room use, required outdoor-air rate, duct resistance, climate, controls and service constraints should be included in the engineering selection.

What ventilation-rate reference should a project use?

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises aiming for 5 or more air changes per hour (ACH) of clean air in building rooms. This is a public-health ventilation target, not a universal unit-sizing rule.
