Indoor air quality (IAQ) drops when pollutants build up faster than fresh air dilutes them. According to the U.S. EPA, Americans spend about 90% of their time indoors, and concentrations of some indoor pollutants can be two to five times higher than outdoor levels. Ventilation products fix this in four ways:

  1. Supply fresh outdoor air — reducing the concentration of indoor pollutants by dilution.
  2. Exhaust stale air and moisture — removing CO₂, odors, and humidity from kitchens, bathrooms, and occupied rooms.
  3. Filter the incoming air — catching dust, pollen, and PM2.5 before they enter the space.
  4. Recover energy (HRV/ERV) — so the fresh air exchange does not inflate your heating or cooling bill.

The result is a space where pollutant levels stay lower, humidity stays controlled, and occupants are more comfortable.

What Makes an HRV Different

A heat recovery ventilator (HRV) is a balanced ventilation unit: it supplies fresh air and exhausts stale air at matched rates, and it passes the two airstreams through a heat-exchange core. In winter, the outgoing warm air preheats the incoming cold air; in summer, the reverse happens. An ERV (energy recovery ventilator) also transfers moisture.

  • HRV: transfers heat. Best for cold, dry climates.
  • ERV: transfers heat and moisture. Best for warm, humid climates, or buildings with high humidity loads.

The key point: an air purifier filters the air already in the room, but it cannot bring in fresh air or remove CO₂. Ventilation — HRV or a fan — is what exchanges the air. Many homes use both: ventilation for air exchange, an air purifier for extra particle filtration.
